NOS Scientists' Collaboration with California's Yurok Tribe Supports Marine Conservation Planning
Scientists from the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) were invited by the Yurok Tribe and NOAA's National Marine Sanctuary Program to participate in a Marine Summit on December 6 and 7 to explore the addition of marine waters to a proposed tribal park in the Klamath River region of northern California. NCCOS was asked to participate based on their current efforts to develop an ecosystem assessment of the marine waters off the coast of Washington , Oregon , and California . Next steps include synthesizing biological and physical data layers identified to describe the unique local marine environment and continuing to work with the tribe on identifying the legal and process requirements associated with potential National Marine Sanctuary (NMS) designation. Earlier in 2007, the tribe approached NOAA's Sanctuary Program with an interest in meeting this goal via the establishment of a NMS in the waters off their reservation.
