Pilot Phase of New National Monitoring Network to Enhance Integration and Cost Efficiencies in Water Quality Monitoring

A National Water Quality Monitoring Network for U.S. Coastal Waters and their Tributaries is being developed to address water quality-related coastal resource management issues over the long term. The Interagency Working Group for the Network, of which NOAA is a member, received twelve statements of interest for participation in the pilot phase. Three regions have been selected for active participation in the pilot phase: Delaware Bay, Lake Michigan, and San Francisco Bay. This is an initial step in the “proof of concept” of the Network design, which straddles both the Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) and the U.S. Group on Earth Observations domains. The overall scope of the Network also addresses near-term objectives of the Ocean Research Priorities Plan, notably those relating to ecosystem response to anthropogenic and natural events and stresses.
