CCCMA Mussel Watch Program Monitoring Data Assists Management of Emerging Contaminants A scientist from the Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment gave an oral presentation that detailed National bivalve body burdens of Polybromated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) from 153 nationally distributed Mussel Watch sites. The presentation, “National Status and Trends Mussel Watch Program: An Assessment of Polychlorinated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) in Sediment and Bivalves of U.S. Coastal Waters” was given at the U.S. EPA Workshop on Building an Integrated Surveillance System for Emerging Chemicals in the Great Lakes and Nationwide, July 16-18, 2007 in Chicago, IL. The conference was attended by representatives of States bordering the Great Lakes, Environment Canada, universities, NOAA, U.S. Geologic Survey, Food and Drug Administration, and Environmental Protection Agency. Attendees acknowledged the value of the Mussel Watch data as a necessary piece in assessing emerging contaminants. Fisheries Management at Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary Benefits from CCMA Expertise A Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment Center scientist participated in two workshops at the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary held on July 18-19 in Galveston, Texas at the NOAA Fort Crockett laboratory. The two workshops were “Fishing Impacts Workshop” and “Boundary Expansion Workshop.” Potential action strategies were discussed to address possible impacts related to fishing at the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary. CCMA was invited to participate due to previous interest and expertise in the area. The workshop was also open to the public. CCMA Conducts International Remote Sensing Training with the Goal of Increasing the Number of Scientists Working in Coastal Resource Management A Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment (CCMA) scientist taught an applied remote sensing class at the Institute of Oceanography in Nha Trang, Vietnam, from July 11-24, 2007. The trainees consisted of young scientists from Vietnam and Thailand. The training was funded by a Japanese non-profit organization (NIPPON) to train marine scientists in developing countries. The NCCOS scientist was one of four instructors; others were from Japan and Scripps. For more information, please contact Varis Ransi at (301) 713-3028 or varis.ransi@noaa.gov. [04M00067] (CCMA)
