CCMA Provides Estimates for Improved Caribbean Stock Assessments
The Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment completed abundance estimates of queen conch (Strombus gigas) and mutton snapper (Lutjanus analis) abundance for Puerto Rico, St. Croix, and St. John based on outcomes from the Fourteenth SouthEast Data, Assessment, and Review (SEDAR) workshop in March 2007. These estimates will contribute to more robust stock assessments and improved fisheries management in the Caribbean . The estimates are based on visual census surveys from 2001 to 2006 coupled with digital benthic habitat maps completed in 2001, and will be used to assess the utility of fishery-independent data in determining the status of these species in the U.S. Caribbean. These results and other workshop proceedings will be published in the NOAA Southeast Fisheries Science Center ’s SEDAR series of technical reports in the near future.
