Weekly Report – June 13, 2007

Educational Partnership Program and CCMA Strive Together to Promote Diversity of Young Science Talent. Continuing efforts to promote diversity in the workplace, the Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment (CCMA) has accepted a participant in NOAA’s Educational Partnership Program-Graduate Sciences Program (GSP) in 2007.  The GSP offers students 2-4 years of training and research opportunities in NOAA-related sciences.  Upon graduation, participants will become a part of the federal workforce.  The candidate, Mr. Andrew Mason, is pursuing a Master's degree in Marine Estuarine Environmental Science at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science in College Park, MD.  For the past five years he has been working at CCMA as a contractor on eutrophication, water quality, nutrients, and sediment chemistry.  His work will focus on contaminants in water and marine sediments.  For more information, contact Terry McTigue at (301) 713-3028 or Terry.McTigue@noaa.gov

CCMA Scientists Help Prioritize Initiatives to Improve Local Research and Resource Management. As a major part of the scientific and resource management collaborations with the Village of Port Graham, Alaska, Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment (CCMA) scientists met with the local community and participated in the Wisdom Keeper Workshop on May 18, 2007.  CCMA scientists met with village Elders, members of the Village Council, and scientists from state and federal agencies to discuss Traditional Ecological Knowledge, and local resource, management, and policy issues.  Elders and scientists answered questions and helped to prioritize the research and management initiatives of the community.  For more information, contact Kimani Kimbrough at (301) 713-3028 ext 114 or kimani.kimbrough@noaa.gov<mailto:kimani.kimbrough@noaa.gov>, or Glenn Seaman at (907) 235-1527 or glenn.seaman@noaa.gov<mailto:glenn.seaman@noaa.gov>
