Volunteer Monitoring Network Identification of Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Provides Validation Support to HAB Forecasting to Alert Coastal Managers

On September 6, a multi-species algal bloom of Pseudo-nitzschia was simultaneously observed by satellite imagery and Southeast Phytoplankton Monitoring Network (SEPMN) students of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, Two centers from the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) collaborated to positively identify Pseudo-nitzschia species in samples and use imagery to show the bloom developed after August 30, appearing to originate at the coast, rather than offshore. The identification of this multi-species bloom in North Carolina waters is the first example showing that data generated by SEPMN volunteers provide observations and validation for a HAB forecasting capability along the Southeastern coast of the U.S. For more information, contact contact Rick Stumpf at (301) 713-3028 or Richard.Stumpf@noaa.gov )

NCCOS Scientist Presents Eutrophication Assessment to Aid in Development of New Jersey Nutrient Monitoring and Assessment Program

A researcher with the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) presented the method of assessment and use of monitoring data by the National Estuarine Eutrophication Assessment to the New Jersey Monitoring Coordinating Council. The Council requested NCCOS's expertise to assist the state with the determination of criteria for nutrient monitoring and assessment in New Jersey coastal water bodies. This presentation was part of the New Jersey Monitoring Coordinating Council (NJMCC) meeting to help guide further development of a nutrient monitoring and assessment program for coastal water bodies in that state. The NJMCC meeting, held in Trenton on September 6, 2007, was convened to discuss present activities and issues in fresh and coastal waters.
